Humpback Whale Breach

There were so many whales to see yesterday.  It felt like the ocean was a mine field filled with Humpbacks.  Whales were very curious about us and some came to to check us out very close.  Many whales were very playful and we got to see a few whales breaching pretty close as well!  Check out this video we made yesterday aboard Sea Monkey!

Whale Watching Maui

Every winter, pods of Pacific humpback whales make the 3,000-mile swim from the chilly waters of Alaska to bask in Maui’s summery shallows, fluking, spy hopping, spouting, and having an all-around swell time.

The humpback is the star of the annual whale-watching season, which usually begins as early as November or December and lasts until April or sometimes May. About 1,500 to 3,000 humpback whales appear in the Hawaiian waters each year. Adults grow to be about 45 feet long and weigh a hefty 40 tons. Humpbacks are officially an endangered species. In 1997, some of the waters around the state were designated the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, the country’s only federal single-species sanctuary. Maui County is world famous as the destination for the Pacific Northwest humpback whales. Their migration crosses 3,100 miles of ocean each season. The humpback whale season in Maui lasts from November to May of every year. These huge mammals travel between 3 and 9 mph at over 1,000 miles per month without stopping. Humpbacks make this journey in groups called pods that congregate for a couple days at a time. The pods stay together loosely and break apart, with the exception of the calves and mothers. Maui is your gateway to some of the best whale watching in the world. The waters off of West Maui and South Maui are shielded by the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala, creating calm and clear waters for high visibility. Humpback whales are also drawn to the area’s shallow waters, less than 600 feet deep, making Maui an ideal spot to start your voyage during the winter whale watching season from December to May.

Lahaina Harbor is home to a wide range of whale watching tours. Treat yourself to scenic ocean views as expert guides take you on the to the best spots to observe whales playfully surfacing, tail slapping, or blowing spouts in the air.
